When to see a specialist

Changes in your hearing can be easy to put down to tiredness, background noise or getting older. But some hearing symptoms are a sign that it is time to seek professional advice. Knowing when to see a hearing specialist can help you protect your hearing health and get the right support without unnecessary worry.

Some symptoms need urgent attention, and ongoing concerns are worth checking. Our Hearing Aid Audiologists can help you move forward with confidence.

Symptoms that need urgent attention

Some hearing symptoms should be assessed as soon as possible. Sudden hearing loss, whether in one ear or both, is always a reason to seek urgent medical advice. This includes a rapid drop in hearing that happens over hours or days, or hearing that suddenly becomes muffled or distorted.

You should also seek help quickly if your hearing changes are accompanied by dizziness, severe imbalance, nausea, pain, swelling or discharge from the ear. Hearing problems following a head injury, or hearing loss alongside facial weakness or numbness, also require immediate assessment.

If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your GP, NHS 111 or urgent care services straight away. Acting quickly helps ensure you are referred to the appropriate specialist and supported from the very beginning.

Ongoing hearing concerns

Many hearing problems develop gradually rather than suddenly. You might notice that conversations feel harder to follow, especially in busy environments, or that people seem to mumble more than they used to. You may find yourself turning the television volume up, struggling on phone calls, or feeling tired after social situations.

Ongoing hearing concerns can include symptoms like ringing or buzzing sounds in the ears, hearing that feels uneven between one ear and the other, or a general sense that listening requires more effort than before. While these changes may feel subtle at first, they can have a real impact on everyday life. Sometimes making you feel isolated from the conversations around you.

When hearing concerns persist, worsen over time or begin to affect your confidence and enjoyment of social situations, it is always sensible to seek professional advice from one of our Hearing Aid Audiologists. A hearing test can help you understand what is happening and whether further support such as hearing aids are needed.

What a Hearing Aid Audiologist can help with

Our Hearing Aid Audiologists are trained to assess hearing symptoms carefully and thoroughly. Their role is not to rush to conclusions, but to listen, investigate and explain things clearly so you feel informed and reassured. At M&S Opticians, we want you to feel confident knowing you are leaving your appointment with the correct advice and support in place.

Our specialists can carry out detailed hearing assessments, identify whether your symptoms suggest an underlying medical issue and advise if onward referral is appropriate. They can also help you understand possible causes of hearing changes and talk through options for managing ongoing concerns, and ways to protect your hearing.

Having a hearing appointment does not mean something serious is wrong. For many people, it provides reassurance and clarity, helping them feel more confident about their hearing health and what to do next.

What to do next

If you are unsure whether your symptoms require specialist care, a hearing test is a positive first step. It can help establish whether your hearing is within a healthy range, whether monitoring is recommended or whether further assessment would be beneficial.

M&S Opticians offer free hearing health checks with experienced Hearing Aid Audiologists. You will receive clear, supportive advice in a calm and unhurried environment, with your wellbeing at the centre of every conversation.

You may also find it helpful to explore our Hearing Health and Conditions hub, learn more about Types of Hearing Loss, or read our information on Tinnitus if ringing or buzzing sounds are a concern. When you are ready, you can Book a Hearing Test, visit our Hearing FAQs to understand more about hearing support.

Taking action at the right time can help you feel informed, reassured and confident about caring for your hearing.
