Are You Missing the Sounds That Matter?

Hearing loss doesn’t happen overnight. It’s gradual—so subtle that many people don’t even realise the impact it’s having on their daily lives. Maybe conversations seem a little harder to follow, especially in busy places, perhaps the TV volume keeps creeping up, or you find yourself asking people to repeat themselves more often. These small changes can be easy to ignore, but over time, they can impact your confidence, social life, and overall well-being.

At M&S Opticians, we recently surveyed our customers to understand their experiences with hearing health. What we found was eye-opening:

  • 1 in 4 people over 60 without hearing aids struggle to hear conversations clearly.
  • 1 in 20 put off having a hearing test because they’re worried about the results.
  • 77% of over-60s who have never had a hearing test believe they don’t need one—yet hearing loss often goes unnoticed until it starts affecting daily life.
  • 23% of people over 60 have never had a hearing test, despite experts recommending a check every two years for over 40s and annually for over 50s.

The good news? Addressing hearing loss can make an incredible difference. In fact:

  • 88% of our hearing aid customers reported improvements in their day-to-day lives.
  • 79% found conversations easier.
  • 74% no longer need to turn the TV or music up as loud.

Despite these benefits, many people delay getting their hearing checked, whether that's fear of the results or forgetting to book. But just like regular eye tests, hearing tests are a crucial part of maintaining your overall health.
